Employment Standards Branch Sets Zero Tolerance Policy for Payroll Violations

After receiving complaints from employees and the WSCA, the Employment Standards Branch has a set a zero tolerance policy for employers who do not pay their workers on at least a semi-monthly basis as required by the Employment Standards Act.

This increased enforcement is aimed at employers who do not pay their workers in a timely fashion, particularly those who wait until they have been paid by their clients or even longer until the end of the season. This illegal practice is common to many firms allowing them to use workers’ unpaid wages as a line of credit while giving them an unfair bidding advantage and increasing the risk of employees going unpaid as has happened in the past.
