WSCA 2008 Conference 6 – 8 February 2008 Sun Peaks Resort Kamloops B.C.

Theme: The Turmoil of Transition; Making Sense of BC Forestry Today and into the Future.

The disintegration of B.C. integrated forestry firms, a world class, province-wide ecosystem crash and now another deep ebb in lumber markets could be the making of a perfect storm for forestry in B.C. But is it a destructive set back or a dramatic going forward?

This year we’ve moved the annual conference to a new location at the Delta Sun Peaks Resort just outside of Kamloops. Like last year we are adding a day’s worth of training that will eventually be a requirement of the BC SAFE Company audit process. The 2004 British Columbia Report of the Forest Safety Task Force recommended supervisors in the forest sector to be certified as a key strategy in eliminating deaths and serious injuries in the province’s forests. The WSCA training provided will be the introduction of the silviculture supervisor training level 1 course. Participation will be limited because of the course content and delivery. Priority registration will be given to WSCA members and conference participants. Those who successfully complete the course will receive recognition to be included in their safety training task book issued at the course (if they have not received a task book from previous training.)

As we put the final program together we will announce in the coming weeks panelists and key note speakers along with a list of the technical workshops to be offered.
