Extreme dry conditions have resulted in numerous forest fires in northern Alberta. So far, 388 forest fires in Alberta have burned more than 143,000 hectares of land. The largest fire is burning out of control near Chisholm and Slave Lake, and has burned more than 116,000 hectares. Several communities have been evacuated, while others remain on Level 2 Alert, meaning residents must be prepared to evacuate given one hour’s notice. The Government of Alberta is in the process of assessing the extent of the damage caused by the fires. It will be announcing within the next few days a disaster recovery program to help individuals and municipalities affected by the fires.
